    Instructions

    1. 1

Drain and rinse 1 cup of soaked red lentils thoroughly, then place them into a food processor with 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion, 2 minced cloves garlic, 1 inch grated fresh ginger, and 1/4 cup fresh cilantro.

    2. 2

Pulse the lentil mixture until it forms a coarse paste, ensuring some texture remains, then transfer it to a large mixing bowl.

    3. 3

Stir in 1/2 cup chickpea flour, 1 tablespoon Berbere spice mix, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper into the lentil mixture until all ingredients are well combined.

    4. 4

Gradually add 1/4 cup unsweetened tamarind paste to the mixture, mixing until it is evenly distributed and the batter slightly thickens.

    5. 5

Heat 4 cups of vegetable oil in a deep heavy-bottomed pot or a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

    6. 6

Carefully drop rounded tablespoons of the lentil mixture into the hot oil, frying for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the fritters are golden brown and cooked through.

    7. 7

Remove the cooked fritters from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

    8. 8

Serve the Tamarind-Spiced Misir Fritters warm as an appetizer or side dish.
